On August 12-15, 2021, the first Camp of Activists of Donetsk and Luhansk Regions "Coal phase-out" took place in Sviatohirsk. The organizers of the event, the Center for Environmental Initiatives "Ecodia", the Representation of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Ukraine and the "Drukarnia" CSO selected 14 activists who care about the ecological future of their region and the country as a whole.
The aim of the camp was to acquaint the participants with world trends and the Ukrainian experience of de-carbonization and the need to gradually phase-out fossil fuels. Speakers and facilitators discussed with the participants the negative impact of coal-based energy production on health and the environment, as well as highlighted the organization of a process of just transition in Ukraine. After talking to Pavlo Vyshebaba, a representative of the "Yedyna Planeta" NGO, the participants gained basic knowledge about campaigning and learned about the activities of the civil society in the fight for clean environment. Iryna Chernysh presented the experience of SaveDnipro NGO and the advocacy campaign to fight the negative impact on the environment and human lives of the Prydniprovska TPP. As a result of the campaign, the owner-company took responsibility to carry out ecological modernization for almost one billion UAH within three years. Kapitalina Pasikova and Nika Perepelytsia, representatives of "Drukarnia", also presented their experience of uniting activists to address local environmental issues.
During the camp, participants had the opportunity not only to get acquainted, but also to develop potential ideas for joint activities aimed at improving the environmental situation in Luhansk and Donetsk regions.
